DSGN 360: Print and Finishing

Made for Print and Finishing 351. The only assignment was to make a book, with no other parameters. We were encouraged to explore what makes a book a book, and chase down any rabbit holes we stumbled across (my specialty!)

︎ I made a draft canvas dummy book and experimented with all kinds of different materials before I settled on the final, perfect book material cocktail, which ended up being:
+ Canvas
+ Gesso (one side only)
+ Drywall tape (both sides)
+ Mod Podge (both sides)
I wanted something that was durable, and that could handle being tossed around and really handled. I found that this combination of materials felt really good to hold - it was strong but still pliable, I could really crush it in my hands and it would still spring back to shape.
This was something I was thinking a lot about when I set out to create this project - I am hard on books. I like to bring them everywhere and the books that I like the most always get beat to crap.

I have been interested in illegible writing for a long time, and I also took this project as an opportunity to explore that, and think about what it means to me personally. I like to keep a journal, and something that habit has led me to notice is that my handwriting varies wildly depending on my emotional state. There are certain things that I only feel comfortable writing down if they are illegible, and I have always found the process of doing that very freeing and therapeutic, even, in a way.
I wanted to make a book where information was stored, and communicated, through the way the book feels in your hands, rather than with words.

“I’m Just Hungry”
Concept + stop motion animation sequence for the song “I’m Just Hungry” by Sports and Culture. I worked with the artist to bring to life a vision for the song as a short promotional teaser for their upcoming album.

Translating sound into motion will always be one of my favorite design challenges. I felt very lucky to be entrusted by the artist to run wild with whatever I pulled from the song, and I had a blast working on this project.
